Dry winter air can make even the tamest hair a challenge to manage. And heaven forbid if you happen to have frizzy hair, going out during the winters becomes a test of your character. Most styling products available in the market will offer some relief to your tired tresses. But prolonged usage might lead to hair damage aggravating the problem. Here a few handy and inexpensive tips that you can try within the comfort of your own home to ease the burden on your shoulders (or rather, on your scalp.)

1. After each wash, try and rinse your hair with the coldest water you can stand after using a shampoo and conditioner for straight hair. The cold water “locks down” the hair cuticle and makes hair appear slicker, less frizzy.

2. Mix one egg to one part mayo and one part olive oil.
Make a paste and apply to hair. Wrap hair in a towel and allow working at least 30 minutes. Rinse out and shampoo and condition as usual. Use the pack once a week.
3. Practice blow drying in the correct manner. Use a big round brush which smoothens your hair as you dry. Always blow in a downward motion. Running the dryer over hair up and down will cause the cuticle to frizz and split. Divide hair into sections with curler pins and dry one section at a time.

4. After washing your hair, add a small amount of Natural Vegetable Glycerin to your mousse or gel. Mix about a dime size amount of Glycerin to about a quarter size amount of gel in your hand. Moisten your other hand with water. Rub hands to mix the water, glycerin and gel. Run through hair and style as usual.

5. You can also add your styling products to dry strands. Simply mix the glycerin with a small amount of water to thin. Then run it through the dry strands.

6. Sometimes hair can get turn frizzy due to medication. In order to restore hair to its former smoothness and shine, keep a big plastic cup in the shower and fill it with about 1/2 cup of apple vinegar and 1/2 cup water. Wash hair as usual. After you rinse the conditioner out of my hair, use this mixture as a final rinse. Vinegar corrects the pH of your hair and actually smoothes the cuticle.

7. Don’t use a shampoo everyday. Shampoo just once or twice a week at the most. The rest of the days you can wet your hair and rub your scalp just enough to loosen any dirt or oil and then use conditioner.

8. On particularly dry days you may wish to leave some conditioner in
by not fully rinsing it out in the shower. Avoid products with high amounts of drying ingredients like sodium lauryl sulphate and alcohol. Once you’ve finished putting gel, etc. into your wet hair, try to leave it alone as much as possible while it’s drying. Let it air dry if you have time, and this will cut down on the frizz.

9. Do not use a hair brush. Using a hair brush on thick hair and “frizzy” prone hair will cause split ends. Instead, use a hair pick when your hair is wet, then finger comb when your hair is dry. In the morning when you wake up, if you have “bed” hair, spritz your hair with water and finger comb it into place.

10. Do not rub your hair with a towel when wet.
Instead, let your hair set in a towel for 10 minutes, then take the towel off.

11. Air dry your hair instead of using a blow dryer or hair dryer. This will also cut down on split ends. Using a curling iron or hot rollers is acceptable, but this can also damage your hair if not done properly.

12. Deep condition your hair using “real” mayonnaise. Use a hair pick to work the mayonnaise into the hair, put a hot towel on it, and wrap plastic wrap around that (olive oil will work too). The hot towel wrapped in plastic wrap helps the oils to penetrate your hair.) Let it set for 15 to 20 minutes before rinsing it out.
13. You can also fill a spray bottle with a mixture of water and hair conditioner. Spray it on and comb through. The conditioner will helps you avoid tangles and keeps the frizz under controlled as well. The balance of water to conditioner is a personal judgment call

14. Try using shea butter. Take just a little bit. Rub it between your fingers and run through your hair. Your hair will not look greasy; it will just be smooth and shiny.

Try out these simple home solutions and say goodbye to frizzy hair for good.
