New Year...new trends...same old you!! Just kidding.

But hey, hair is important you know. And you need to know what to do with it and what NOT to do with it this year. So I got you a list.

What to do:

1. Get waves and those oh-so romantic curls.
2. Or just keep your hair natural for a while, with no chemicals or products that can damage or roughen your hair.
3. Hair extensions are definitely in and about time you got one. Just for a change.
4. Long, flowy, Rapunzal locks are always a crowd puller.
5. Bed head is still in (thankfully) and so are pixes and bobs.
6. If you’re a businesswoman, keeping them short and neat will be the key.
7. And if you can manage it, then get some funky hair accessories. They will serve you well on a dull day.

What not to do:

1. Avoid styles that require you to use chemicals on your hair. Remember hair once damaged takes a long time to get back it former strength and shine.
2. Messy hair, as opposed to the carefully styled bed-head, is never in and it won’t be in this year either. So if you have them long, learn to keep them done. If you can’t put too much effort into it just blow-dry and straighten with a flat iron. Or do the roll-up-n-pin-up thing that gives you subtle waves in just 15 minutes flat.

What the men should do:

Good news guys, the short clean style that is above the collar is back and the look is expected to stay the while (leave the longer dos for the boys).

The color of the season:

Brunette is back with a bang for all those who are looking to break-away from a monotonous look. But for those who don’t want to do anything extreme, lighter, warmer shades should be ideal. And just so you know, natural hair color is quite in these days as well.

This effortlessly chic tousled style will certainly have you making waves wherever you go. And in just five easy steps.

Step 1: Rough dry hair as usual. Use a texturizer or sea spray to get additional texture.

Step 2: Pull hair into a ponytail at the crown.

Step 3: Now just twist hair into a large pin curl and clip it down.

Step 4: Leave it to set for 15 minutes.

Step 5: Remove clip and finger comb your mane for a fab finish.

When it comes to hair color, californication is so last season!! When a trademark blonds like Cameron Diaz, Claire Danes, Hilary Duff, Ashley Olsen, and Alison Lohman make the switch to darker manes, you know that ‘L.A.-blonde’ is out and ‘Manhattan-brunette’ is the in look.

If you’re one who likes to keep with the trend, you might wanna go from brown from blonde. But there are a few things you need to keep in mind.

Brad Johns, head colorist at Red Door Spas tells Elle.com that the first rule in hair color is that you have to make sure you are choosing the right shade and tone for you.

‘The right hair color brings out your eyes and makes your skin glow and look healthy.’

Ashy, drab, or too dark browns can age you and look too severe.

To find the perfect shade, Johns advices that you should look at pictures of yourself from your childhood. This will highlight the best tones for you and unveil a complex color combination.

Hair coloring is serious business. And Johns has a warning for the uninitiated:

Do not do it alone. You should have a serious consultation with your colorist, and remember that this needs to be collaboration. Go prepared with pictures of hair that you love and hate. This will ensure your final product. If you have really long hair, have some lighter colors added in the front so it doesn’t look so severe.

Maintaining a new color is an arduous task the further you go away from your natural color the more maintenance your mane will require. You will need to see your colorist at least every six weeks or your roots will begin to show.

And of course you should always use the correct shampoo and conditioner. Depending on your color your colorist will recommend the right products for your specific needs.

To finish off the look Johns says that you will need to change your makeup:

Yes, you should change your makeup every time you color your hair. The best shades for brunettes are warm and spicy ones. Anything too neutral will wash you out. Brunettes should stay natural for the day and play up their smoky eyes in the evening. Sultry makeup looks great on brunettes.

A D-I-Y might not be the best idea so remember to consult your colorist and have them help you choose the perfect shade for you. Go prepared with questions so that you know how much it will cost and how often you’ll need to come in for touch-ups.

Hair coloring is fun and spontaneous, but you should always be armed with a plan. So go ahead and spoil yourself a little this season with a touch of black and join the league of all the glam starlets.

Okay I have to admit, I like the lass. Not a lot, but I like her. I thought she looked absolutely gorgeous in a black mane. So you can imagine the angst I felt when I saw this picture of her posted on the net.

I wondered what she would come out looking like. I just hoped and prayed the nimble-footed paparazzi that follow the celebs like hungry wolves would a hare, can get some redeeming pictures of her soon.

Well, here it is. And I must say the new color and the fab do looks simply fetching on Nic.

Most hair products today are made with synthetic ingredients. Unfortunately the multi-million dollar corporations that make these products will do anything to improve their profit margins including adding ingredients that are known toxins.

A majority of these toxins are known to cause cancer, etc. babies and young children may develop allergies by the use of these products. Long term use has already been proved damaging and can cause numerous ailments including cancer.

So how do you protect your family and yourself from these toxin-infused hair products? The first step would be to identify these harmful substances and to try and avoid using products that contain them.

The 5 most common synthetic ingredients are:

Sodium Lauryl/Laureth Sulfate
- A cheap and harsh detergent used in most shampoos for its cleansing and foaming properties. Usually made from petroleum, it is commonly passed off in some products claiming to be a natural ingredient found in coconuts. This chemical causes allergic reactions including skin rashes, eye irritation and scalp scurf which is similar to dandruff.

PVP/VA Copolymer - Another petroleum- derived chemical commonly used in hairsprays and styling products. Apart from hair damage and scalp infections, inhaled particles from this toxic chemical can even damage your lungs.

Stearalkonium Chloride - An ammonium compound commonly used in hair conditioners. It was developed by the fabric industry as a fabric softener and is used because it is dirt cheap. This product is toxic and causes allergic reactions.

Synthetic Fragrances - Avoid using any products with the word ‘fragrance’ on the label as most hair products liberally use synthetic fragrances which are actually chemical concoctions that could contain up to 200 artificial ingredients. Most commonly used chemicals are known to cause headaches, vomiting, dizziness, rashes, etc.

Synthetic Colors -Synthetic colors are known to be carcinogens and should not be used. That includes synthetic hair dyes, synthetic temporary hair paint and highlighters. They are very damaging for your hair and scalp.

A healthy mane mirrors a healthy body. And the quickest way to lose health is to abuse yourself with styling products that contain harmful chemicals. Look out for these harmful chemicals in your hair products and protect yourself and your family from toxic fashion.

Fine hair tends to fall flat and lack movement which creates a lot of trouble especially since pretty much any kind of styling wouldn’t generally last too long on it. The solution: L’Oreal Paris Vive Pro Style and Body Infusing Shampoo and Conditioner. Its
Dual-Action Technology with Styling Polymers creates control and prevents style fallout.
It helps your hair get into, and stay into shape, with renewed body and fullness, while the texture is transformed to a very touchable silky caress while staying in control.

Start with the Shampoo: Its styling polymers inject body and volume into the hair, creating a styling base. Fine hair is volumized with a new fullness. The shampoo improves manageability so styling is easier, and it also provides long lasting style retention.

Finish with the Conditioner:
it conditions and detangles fine hair while adding weightless body. Your hair is left with great bounce and brilliant shine to boot.

You might always feel disheartened and think that you have the worst hair of world, whenever you look at your strands. You feel more gauche when you see celebrities on red carpet for Oscars. Their hair seems to be thicker and healthy. After watching them you feel like to chop down your hair to the shortest haircut.

Actually, I will tell you the secret behind their glamorous hair. Even their hair is normal like yours and for their perfect look; they ‘...get extensions like crazy for Oscar season because they want their hair to be thicker,’ as disclosed by Hollywood hairdresser Michael Shaun Corby, creative director for Alterna haircare.

Many get quick, clip-on extensions that can be removed. They also use extra hair for thicker and huge buns and chignons. Corby told that he use ironing-starch and an antistatic hair spray to tame hair static.
So, I think now you know the real secret behind their lush and heavy hair.

Dry winter air can make even the tamest hair a challenge to manage. And heaven forbid if you happen to have frizzy hair, going out during the winters becomes a test of your character. Most styling products available in the market will offer some relief to your tired tresses. But prolonged usage might lead to hair damage aggravating the problem. Here a few handy and inexpensive tips that you can try within the comfort of your own home to ease the burden on your shoulders (or rather, on your scalp.)

1. After each wash, try and rinse your hair with the coldest water you can stand after using a shampoo and conditioner for straight hair. The cold water “locks down” the hair cuticle and makes hair appear slicker, less frizzy.

2. Mix one egg to one part mayo and one part olive oil.
Make a paste and apply to hair. Wrap hair in a towel and allow working at least 30 minutes. Rinse out and shampoo and condition as usual. Use the pack once a week.
3. Practice blow drying in the correct manner. Use a big round brush which smoothens your hair as you dry. Always blow in a downward motion. Running the dryer over hair up and down will cause the cuticle to frizz and split. Divide hair into sections with curler pins and dry one section at a time.

4. After washing your hair, add a small amount of Natural Vegetable Glycerin to your mousse or gel. Mix about a dime size amount of Glycerin to about a quarter size amount of gel in your hand. Moisten your other hand with water. Rub hands to mix the water, glycerin and gel. Run through hair and style as usual.

5. You can also add your styling products to dry strands. Simply mix the glycerin with a small amount of water to thin. Then run it through the dry strands.

6. Sometimes hair can get turn frizzy due to medication. In order to restore hair to its former smoothness and shine, keep a big plastic cup in the shower and fill it with about 1/2 cup of apple vinegar and 1/2 cup water. Wash hair as usual. After you rinse the conditioner out of my hair, use this mixture as a final rinse. Vinegar corrects the pH of your hair and actually smoothes the cuticle.

7. Don’t use a shampoo everyday. Shampoo just once or twice a week at the most. The rest of the days you can wet your hair and rub your scalp just enough to loosen any dirt or oil and then use conditioner.

8. On particularly dry days you may wish to leave some conditioner in
by not fully rinsing it out in the shower. Avoid products with high amounts of drying ingredients like sodium lauryl sulphate and alcohol. Once you’ve finished putting gel, etc. into your wet hair, try to leave it alone as much as possible while it’s drying. Let it air dry if you have time, and this will cut down on the frizz.

9. Do not use a hair brush. Using a hair brush on thick hair and “frizzy” prone hair will cause split ends. Instead, use a hair pick when your hair is wet, then finger comb when your hair is dry. In the morning when you wake up, if you have “bed” hair, spritz your hair with water and finger comb it into place.

10. Do not rub your hair with a towel when wet.
Instead, let your hair set in a towel for 10 minutes, then take the towel off.

11. Air dry your hair instead of using a blow dryer or hair dryer. This will also cut down on split ends. Using a curling iron or hot rollers is acceptable, but this can also damage your hair if not done properly.

12. Deep condition your hair using “real” mayonnaise. Use a hair pick to work the mayonnaise into the hair, put a hot towel on it, and wrap plastic wrap around that (olive oil will work too). The hot towel wrapped in plastic wrap helps the oils to penetrate your hair.) Let it set for 15 to 20 minutes before rinsing it out.
13. You can also fill a spray bottle with a mixture of water and hair conditioner. Spray it on and comb through. The conditioner will helps you avoid tangles and keeps the frizz under controlled as well. The balance of water to conditioner is a personal judgment call

14. Try using shea butter. Take just a little bit. Rub it between your fingers and run through your hair. Your hair will not look greasy; it will just be smooth and shiny.

Try out these simple home solutions and say goodbye to frizzy hair for good.
